Training snacks or reward chunks

When training your dog, you want a reward snack that is 'bite-swallow-away', meaning small enough that your dog or puppy doesn't have to chew so you don't have to wait to continue your exercise. Sometimes, when your dog does something really well, or the training session is over, you may want to give more as an extra tasty reward.

In general, the younger the puppy and the smaller the breed, the smaller the reward treats should be. Sometimes even smaller than your pinky nail!

You also want to pay attention to the contents of the kibble. For example, reward chunks that are colored (pink, red, green) almost certainly contain dyes and you should ask yourself whether you want to give this to your dog. Turn the package over and read the ingredients.

Variety - your dog has taste too! Vary different snacks and/or save a snack that your dog particularly likes when he has done a good job.

We have listed various training snacks for you in the webshop, which is useful! Click here .

Examples of good training snacks

The Carnis brand has some good options of dried snacks that are made from 100% of the mentioned animal species. For example: Carnis Lamb sticks, Carnis Duck meat trainer, Carnis Beef tripe trainer.

There are also meat strips on the market, which are also made 100% from a dried animal species and are easy to break.

The training snacks from Amiguitos are also suitable for training, although these snacks do not contain 100% meat but also other ingredients such as legumes, etc., but this does not have to be unhealthy, especially if you give them in moderation. The cat variant is the same as the dog, but smaller and is therefore suitable for puppies and smaller breeds.

And then you have the steamed sausages. This is steamed meat and, if you get the right brand, it doesn't contain any unhealthy ingredients. Examples are Naturis steamed or long-life sausages. Tip: cut the sausage into small pieces and store them in separate bags in the freezer for a longer shelf life.

Tip: does your dog like its own chunks? Weigh out a portion and use it for training! If desired, you can also use another (good) brand of kibble that has a different taste, or for example the variant for smaller dogs, where the size of the kibble is suitable for training.

Pay attention to the weight of the total food in a day (applies to all snacks) so that the dog or puppy does not become too fat. Eden Semi-Moist dog food can also easily be broken into smaller pieces and is very tasty.

Tasty, healthy and responsible snacks

Here too, the smaller the dog, the longer it takes him to eat a snack. For example, a shepherd takes less time with a piece of dried beef lung (of +/- 6cm x 6cm) than a Chihuahua. Adjust the size to your dog by, for example, cutting or breaking it into pieces. The same applies to an 8-week-old puppy and a 6-month-old puppy. The snack pieces grow with the puppy, as it were.

Here too, pay attention to the contents of the snack and preferably give your dog a snack that is made from 100% meat and preferably comes from the EU. Snacks that come from outside Europe are irradiated/sprayed to combat vermin and this then enters the dog's body.

Examples of tasty snacks:

Dried beef lung or lamb lung, dried tripe rods, dried fish (sprats, salmon skin, herring, cod skin, dried sausages, chicken sticks, beef spaghetti, beef slices, esophagus with sheep fat, rabbit ears, duck necks, chicken necks, goose necks.

Most of these snacks can be broken into smaller pieces for smaller dogs and for smaller dogs (and puppies) these snacks are also a piece of cake that will last them longer.

Dried Nice long chews and/or chewing bones that last a dog longer

We are often asked by customers which chewing sticks or chewing bones are hard enough and which a dog can use for a long time. Again, the bigger the dog, the faster they eat a bone.

Our advice: Chewing is intended to satisfy the need to chew and to calm down. We therefore recommend that a dog not chew on a chewing stick for longer than 20 to 30 minutes, 2-3 times a day. His need to chew is then satisfied and it is time to sleep.

Examples of healthy, safe chews that last a long time: Churpi (cheese from Nepal), Beef head skin plates, cattle head skin in different sizes, Achilles tendon, deer ears with fur, deer ear with fur, beef neck muscle, Beef ear with meat pit, goat ears, lamb ears, horse tendons.

We recommend bovine skin plates: most dogs, even the largest, will last a long time with this. The product does not crumble or become slippery. Click here for an overview of all types and sizes of bovine skin.

NB the above snacks are not 'bones' but mainly made from muscle meat. (Dried) bones can have a negative impact on the digestive system. See below.

Dried bones to chew on for a long time

Most of the snacks mentioned above contain no or small bones. There are bones on the market such as dried calf feet and beef knuckles and they indeed last most dogs for a long time. However, be careful with this . The dog may break its teeth and/or the feces may become so dry that they become clogged. Also read the article Dog snacks and safety.

“We do not sell dried bones because we cannot guarantee safety”

Raw bones

Raw bones are allowed, but there are a number of rules:

  • Never give raw bones to a dog that eats kibble. Only when dogs are fed raw food (KVV for example) is the acidity of the stomach acidic enough to digest the bones.
  • Never give 'support bones', for example knees, upper legs, etc., on which an animal is standing. These are too hard, can splinter, damage the teeth or cause the dog to become constipated.
  • Only give bones from young animals.

Examples of raw bones:

Lamb ribs, chicken neck, duck neck, poultry carcass (but be careful with turkey as these are hard bones), poultry wings.

Toys in which you hide sweets

There are toys that you put sweets in, for example the KONG. You can put chunks in it, but also (healthy) steamed meat or canned food. We are in favor of the ROGZ YUMZ. This toy can be approached by the dog from two sides and the material seems to be more accepted by dogs than the KONG.

The ROGZ YUMZ and the KONG are relatively safe, even for puppies, although we have experienced that (adult) dogs can also destroy these toys. Look at the sizes and cheerful colors of the YUMZ in our webshop
